PSGCNJ TECH TIP
Using Your Other Email Address With Yahoo Groups
Here’s a Yahoo Group technical tip some of you may need sooner or later:Once you’ve set up a Yahoo account ID, you can have it recognize your other email addresses (from any source). This can be handy if …
- …you want to change which email address Yahoo Group announcements are delivered to,
- …you want it to honor emails to the group that you send from another email account, or
- …you want to change the email account associated with your Yahoo account.
- Log into your Yahoo ID account. Here’s a shortcut to start that: https://login.yahoo.com/
- After logging in, go your “Account Info”. Here’s a shortcut
to that (use after you’ve logged in):
https://edit.yahoo.com/config/eval_profile?.done=http://profiles.yahoo.com%2f&.src=ytc&.intl=us (this will ask you to re-verify yourself by re-entering your password) - Scroll down to the “Email Information” section and if you need to add an email address to those already listed, click the “Edit” link to the right of that.
- Click the “Add another” link to open a field box into which you can enter the additional email address, and then click the “Save” link to the right of that.
- There might be an extra step at this point where you are sent
an email message at the new address. You’d need to check your
email and click on the link in that email message to validate that
the new email address is really yours.
- If you want to make the new email address your primary one, you then need to back to the page where you edit your account info and continue with step 6 below, otherwise go on to step 7.
- After doing that, you can go pick a primary address from those listed. Go back to the Email addresses page (either refresh the page if still open, or redo steps 2 and 3), then click the radio button to the left of the email address you prefer to receive email through; then click the Save button at the bottom to finish.
- Next, you may want to go to each of your Yahoo Groups to edit
your settings for which email address you want to receive message
announcements through. As you already know, PSGCNJ’s Yahoo Group
is located at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psgcnj/
but you can jump to its Edit Membership link by using this link:
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/psgcnj/join
Scroll down to the Email Address section, pick the preferred email address for receiving posted messages and announcements, and don’t forget to scroll to the bottom of the page to click the “Save Changes” button.- You can also use this page to pick how you want to see Yahoo Group messages – either have each one individually forward to you (including their attachments), or periodically in a summary compilation (but no attachments), never (in which case the only way you’d see the messages is by visiting the PSGCNJ Yahoo Group web site).
- You may also notice that the Email Address section for the Group also has an “Add new email address” link. You might be able to skip some of the above steps by starting at step 7 and using that link. The disadvantage of this is that the change may be limited to just that one narrow purpose, but you might also want to set it as your primary email address for Yahoo in general and then for other individual groups, as described by the above procedure.
- If you may want to edit the preferred email address for all of
your other yahoo groups, here’s a shortcut to your list. You’d
click into each one, and follow the “Edit Membership” link on each
to repeat step 7 for each of them.
http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups - If you are using a “shared” PC (e.g., the workstations in the PSG room), don’t forget to click the “Sign out” link on one of your Yahoo pages, and then close all web browser windows.
- Email your announcement to psgcnj@yahoogroups.com using a Yahoo Group-recognized email account (preferably the one you picked for use with our PSGCNJ Yahoo Group). (This method lets you include attachments/files in your message, but the formatting of your message will probably be messed up a bit.) Or …
- Log into the PSGCNJ Yahoo Group web site, and use the “Post” link on the left-side menu (under the “Messages” one). That’ll take you to a page to write the message you want to post to this message board, which would then be distributed via email to all members. (Messages posted this way cannot include attachments.)
Either way messages are sent, copies are all retained on the Messages board on the Yahoo Group web site (without any attachments).
