How To Give a LinkedIn Recommendation for Non-Employer (e.g., Volunteer) Work?

When giving a recommendation, LinkedIn requires you to specify which of your contact’s jobs (or educational history periods) your recommendation relates to and the job each of you held at the time.  Often a person doesn’t list the particular organization or job in their profile , but there is a way around this:

LinkedIn offers four categories of relationships when you start a recommendation:  Colleague, Business Partner, Service Provider, or Student.

If you choose "Business Partner" you'll only need to specify where you and your connection were working during that time period, you won't be prompted to specify your respective levels in your organizations, etc.  You will only need to pick your employer (at the time) and their employer (at the time) as the relevant companies.

Of course, if either of you do not list any history for the particular period (neither  job nor education), then LinkedIn will assume you don’t have a valid basis for knowing anything about the person’s work.
