PSGCNJ TECH TIP
What Is The PSGCNJ LinkedIn Group? What Is The PSG of New Jersey LinkedIn Group? How Do I Join Them?
A LinkedIn Group is a grouping in LinkedIn, typically for an association or common interest group, whereby all members of the group are automatically included in your “network.” If you are a member of a LinkedIn Group, you can see the profiles of other members and they can appear in search results for you. You can also communicate to another member with messages via LinkedIn without having to know their email address.
- Note: LinkedIn "Groups" are 1st order relationships only. Joining one does not give you visibility into other member’s other connections (2nd order connections), and it does not make you visible or accessible to their other connections.
The PSGCNJ LinkedIn Group (including the spelled-out equivalent) is exclusively for full, active members and graduates (and our DoL facilator(s)).
- In other words, you have to have fulfilled the required workshops/training, and have to be fulfilling your weekly membership volunteering requirement in one of the PSGCNJ committees.
- If you graduate to a job, you’re entitled to stay in the group as long as you don’t misuse it (spamming people or not complying with their contact preferences).
- If just drop out of PSGCNJ, you aren’t entitled to stay in the LinkedIn group (unless you’ve been granted “emeritus” status for exceptional service to PSGCNJ.)
The PSG’s of NJ (Professional Service Groups of New Jersey) Statewide LinkedIn Group is a different LinkedIn Group that enables members of any one PSG to have visibility of and access those members and graduates of any other PSG statewide who opted to join this statewide group. It is of course larger than our own and is more active in terms of news and discussions. Its membership requirements are essentially the same as for our own, so if you are a member of the PSGCNJ LinkedIn Group, you can join the PSG of New Jersey group.
When you graduate from PSG, we encourage you to “pay it forward” to other PSG members by staying in these LinkedIn Groups to be a contact resource for fellow PSG members who may need information about your current or former employers. But even now with relatively modest numbers of participants in these LinkedIn groups, they can be help you find other members whose backgrounds may help your job hunting research.
To join a LinkedIn Group (after you’ve already set up our own LinkedIn account and profile), go to the web address for it (or use the LinkedIn “Search Groups” feature to find it based on its name), and click the button labeled “Join Group.” You can click these links to go to them:
Our Membership Committee has responsibility for approving people into our PSGCNJ LinkedIn Group and checks requests to join the LinkedIn group each week after training records have been updated.
For the statewide PSG of New Jersey LinkedIn Group, the approval to join that will probably depend on your already being a member of a local PSG LinkedIn Group like PSGCNJ’s, and this should be visible in your LinkedIn Profile before you try to join it.
