How Can I Embed A Presentation, Video, or Document Into My Linkedin Profile?

You can embed documents or files into your LinkedIn profile.  The method you’d use depends on what you want to embed into your LinkedIn profile.

Embedding Document or Presentation via SlideShare:

  1. Go to http://slideshare.com and set up a free “basic” account for yourself, and upload your .pptx or .ppt slideshow or your .docx, .doc, or .pdf document to your account.  Once uploaded, you’ll want to opt to enable embedding (via “Edit Presentation” link).
  2. Sign into http://linkedin.com , scroll down the left-side menu, click into Applications, then on the resulting page click into SlideShare Presentations, pick your preferences, and click “Add application.”
  3. Import your SlideShare account slideshow to your LinkedIn SlideShare application:
    1.  Go to your LinkedIn SlideShare application and click on “Settings.”
    2. Under “Profile settings,” use the dropdown to select the number of presentations to be displayed.  Or, choose “Show player” to display a complete presentation.

(Those instructions are a bit fuzzy, but are the best we’ve found so far.)

Here’s a SlideShare promotional sample:

Embedding YouTube Video via SlideShare:

  1. Do step 1 and 2 above, if you haven’t already.
  2. Upload your presentation to SlideShare as usual.
  3. Copy the URL of the YouTube video you want to insert.
  4. Once your presentation converts, go to the Edit Slideshow and choose Insert YouTube Videos and paste the above URL in the form.
  5. Add the SlideShare application on your LinkedIn profile and link your account (see above).

(Those instructions are a bit fuzzy, but are the best we’ve found so far.)

Embedding Presentation via Google Docs Presentation:

  1. If you don’t already have a Google account for your settings and preferences when using Google, set one up.  (This does not mean you need to set up a Google Mail or Gmail account.  You can use any existing email address to initiate a Google account.
  2. Go to Google Docs http://docs.google.com .
  3. Import (upload) your .ppt presentation into a Google Docs Presentation or build your presentation from scratch in Google Docs.
  4. Sign into http://linkedin.com , scroll down the left-side menu, click into Applications, then on the resulting page click into the “Google Presentation” app, pick your preferences, and click “Add application.”
  5. Using the Google Presentation App in LinkedIn, edit your preferences to use the Google Docs Presentation of your choice.

(Those instructions are fuzzy, but are the best we’ve found so far.)

Embedding Folder Approach via Box.net:

Box.net can be used to create a box displaying a list of files of any type.

  1. Sign into http://linkedin.com , scroll down the left-side menu, click into Applications, then on the resulting page click into the “Box.net Files” app, pick your preferences, and click “Add application.
  2. Follow the prompting to either set up a Box.net account (http://box.net) if you don’t have one, or to link the LinkedIn box.net application to it.
  3. Use this application’s menu to "upload” each file you want to make available through LinkedIn.  A browse window that will allow you to browse YOUR HARD DRIVE and pick the file you want to upload.  The file will then be listed in the Box.net window in your LinkedIn profile.

(Note:  Before you upload files, you might want to rename them to something that looks descriptive of the contents of the file.)
Visitors to your LinkedIn profile don’t need a Box.net account to open one of your files, but they do need whatever software is required by the type of file you put there (e.g., .pdf requires Adobe Reader (free), .ppt requires MS PowerPoint, etc.)
PS – If it wouldn’t be distracting to your LinkedIn Profile, you might consider including some instructions for opening your box.net files.  For example, “Under your name's Files, open the filename file.  Put your cursor on the file name, click the blue arrow to the right and click ‘Preview’ in the drop-down menu. Then click "Ok" and "No" to the next questions.”
