NEW MEMBER INFORMATION

Requirements to become a member:

  • Career Instruction: All prospective members must attend the Friday PSG Orientation and must also complete a series of five PSG training workshops.
    • PSG Orientation: An overview of PSG and how it works. Prospective members must attend this class before registering for the five-day workshop series. Meets Fridays at 1:00pm at the One-Stop Career Center (map)
  • Five PSG Training Workshops: Five afternoon workshops, which can be taken as a consecutive series from Monday through Friday, help prepare prospective members for a successful job search. See the Training Curriculum for more information.
  • New Member Packets: These are available in the PSG room, and copies are usually provided during the PSG Orientation class.
  • General Membership Meetings: Prospective members are encouraged to attend our meetings while completing their requirements. General meetings provide networking opportunities as well as presentations to assist with the job search.
    • We meet every Monday, except holidays, starting at 10:30 AM for 1 to 2 hours. The meetings take place in the large basement room of the First United Methodist Church, 48 West High Street in Somerville. The church has very limited parking, but there is also street parking (some metered) and nearby public parking lots (for example, see Lot Lot 1 on this map. Don't confuse lot 1 with the private lot across the street from the Church).
  • The New Member Checklist offers a simple way to keep track of the initiation steps, including how to join our Yahoo Group mailing list.

Requirements to maintain membership:

  • To remain a member of PSGCNJ, you must volunteer at least three hours of time to PSGCNJ projects or functions through a PSGCNJ Committee of your choice.
    • Volunteer hours should be in the presence of other PSG members, either at the DoL facility or off-site in committee meetings.
    • The three hours per week does not include attending the general meeting, unless you are making a presentation at the meeting.

    We encourage members to volunteer first for the Opportunity Center, because finding job opportunities is the primary focus of PSGCNJ. We also encourage participation in the other committees, which support the career development of current members, continuity of PSG itself and expanded public outreach to local businesses.

Online Resources

  • PSGCNJ Yahoo Group: and its email functions, is the primary means of distributing PSGCNJ announcements and documents (for example, presentation handouts). You can also make requests of your own through the Yahoo group.
    • Before you can join the Yahoo Group, you will need a Yahoo account of some kind, so be sure to set that up first, if necessary. (You can configure the account to use an existing email address from elsewhere.)
    • You can then submit a request to join the Yahoo group via http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/psgcn. However, our Membership Committee will need to confirm that you've met the membership requirements before authorizing your participation in the Yahoo group.
  • PSGCNJ’s LinkedIn group might help your networking efforts.
    • Once you’ve met the membership requirements, you can join our LinkedIn Group too. If you don't have a LinkedIn account already, set one up and then go to http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1199967 to submit your request for participation in that as well.
    • You may also choose to join the Statewide PSG LinkedIn Group after joining our PSGCNJ LinkedIn Group. The procedure is the same, but via http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1937012. (PSGCNJ is the original founder and a co-manager of the statewide group.)
  • Blue Card “Graduation” Requirement
    • When you’ve landed a job (permanent or contract), the unemployment office needs you to fill out and give them a “Blue Card". The image attached here may suffice if you can’t get one from the PSG room. (Although a printout of this image may not be postage-free, you could fold it so that it fits into an envelope and mail it that way.)
